In defending our mouths and preventing bacterial growth, saliva is crucial. Because we produce less saliva when we are fasting, we are less protected from the oral bacteria that can cause halitosis (foul breath). Your salivary glands will start to stimulate again and battle these bacteria after you break your fast.
Oral hygiene advice for when you’re not fasting
It is crucial to carry on with your oral hygiene regimen during the hours when you are not fasting.
- After your last meal before starting the fast, brush for two to three minutes using fluoride toothpaste to prevent plaque accumulation.
- To clean the spaces in between your teeth that your toothbrush can’t reach, use interdental tools like floss and interdental brushes every day.
- To prevent oral bacteria from growing on your tongue and to maintain the health of your mouth, use a tongue scraper.
