How can we maintain fresh breath when fasting?

In defending our mouths and preventing bacterial growth, saliva is crucial. Because we produce less saliva when we are fasting, we are less protected from the oral bacteria that can cause halitosis (foul breath). Your salivary glands will start to stimulate again and battle these bacteria after you break your fast.

Oral hygiene advice for when you’re not fasting

It is crucial to carry on with your oral hygiene regimen during the hours when you are not fasting.

  • After your last meal before starting the fast, brush for two to three minutes using fluoride toothpaste to prevent plaque accumulation.
  • To clean the spaces in between your teeth that your toothbrush can’t reach, use interdental tools like floss and interdental brushes every day.
  • To prevent oral bacteria from growing on your tongue and to maintain the health of your mouth, use a tongue scraper.

Fasting is not the time to skip taking care of your teeth and gums.

Food suggestions to avoid dehydration and bad breath

  • It is crucial to carry on with your oral hygiene regimen during the hours when you are not fasting.
  • Avoid foods that give you poor breath, such as onions, garlic, and spices, when you break your fast.
  • To stay hydrated and to wash away meal residue, drink at least 2-3 liters of water daily.
  • Tea and coffee, which contain caffeine and have diuretic effects, should be avoided.
  • To prevent dehydration, try to avoid eating foods with high salt and sugar content.

Additional dental hygiene advice

  • It is important to wait 30 to 60 minutes after breaking your fast before brushing your teeth to give your saliva time to naturally wash away any food particles and give your mouth a chance to recover to its normal PH level. This is done to prevent acidic meals from harming the enamel while it is already compromised.
  • For a dental plan that is customized to your unique needs, it is crucial to schedule routine appointments with your dentist and hygienist.
  • Training and fasting are not the time to skip taking care of your teeth and gums. The fundamentals of your dental hygiene practice don’t alter, even if you need to adjust the schedule.
